Magnesium for Preventive care

The general public takes lot of supplements to maintain good health. One of the supplements that has been ignored is magnesium. It is the fourth most abundant element in the body and is involved in cardiovascular health, prevention of stroke, control of diabetes mellitus, prevention of cognitive decline, control of blood pressure and prevention of certain cancers such as pancreatic and colon cancer.

Magnesium promotes cardiovascular health and is protective against age related disorders such as cardiovascular disease, stroke diabetes and osteoporosis. It is also important for dental health.

Food sources for magnesium are not too reliable. The magnesium content in leafy vegetables, nuts, whole grains, legumes, fruits and fish have seen decline since the 1950s. Grain refining processes for bread and pasta remove about 95% of magnesium.

To choose a proper supplement, select a brand that contains two-part components: 1) magnesium citrate, (for quick release) and 2) magnesium oxide (for extended release).
